The medium duty towing is an industry classification for towing of smaller sized commercial vehicles weighing between 10,001 and 26,000 pounds. Vehicles falling under this classification are wide ranging and may include; mid size vehicles, delivery trucks, utility vehicles, motor-homes, parcel trucks, ambulances, small dump trucks, landscape trucks, flatbed and stake trucks, box trucks, refrigerated trucks, small and medium sized school and transit busses. This category is divided into four classes described below:
Class 3 –Vehicles weighing between *10,001 and 14,000 pounds driven on six or
more tires, generally having a single rear axle with dual wheeled tires.
Class 4 –Vehicles weighing between *14,001 and 16,000 pounds driven on six or
more tires, generally having a single rear axle with dual wheeled tires.
Class 5 –Vehicles weighing between *16,001 and 19,500 pounds driven on six or
more tires, generally having a single rear axle with dual wheeled tires.
Class 6 –Vehicles weighing between *19,001 and 26,000 pounds driven on six or
more tires, generally having a single rear axle with dual wheeled tires.
The Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) of a vehicle can be found on the identification label on the vehicle’s drivers side door
frame.
